Lord's Media Centre
London United Kingdom
Designed by Future Systems for Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, the Lord’s Media Centre is a landmark in both architectural design and construction. Completed in 1999, the building was awarded the RIBA Stirling Prize that same year, becoming the first sporting building to receive the prestigious award.
The Media Centre was the world’s first all-aluminium semi-monocoque building, applying construction principles and techniques more commonly associated with shipbuilding. Its distinctive single-shell form was constructed from 26 three-meter aluminium sections, combining architectural design with the precision and specialist fabrication methods of the maritime industry.
CIG brought its shipbuilding expertise to the project, carrying out the engineering, material supply, and production of the complete 3D building kit. The aluminium sections were produced as a prefabricated structure before being brought together to create the finished building. Welding and installation were carried out in collaboration with Pendennis, a UK-based shipyard.
The result remains one of the most recognizable structures at Lord’s Cricket Ground and an important example of how specialist shipbuilding technology can be applied to complex architectural construction.
