The Port Lands Bridges are a key part of Toronto’s waterfront revitalization, strengthening connections between the Port Lands and the downtown core. The project comprises four crossings: the Cherry Street North LRT Bridge, Cherry Street North Vehicle Bridge, Cherry Street South Bridge, and Commissioners Street Bridge. Together, they support multiple modes of movement while establishing a cohesive architectural presence across the renewed river corridor.

Designed by Grimshaw Architects (with SPB), the bridges use white-painted steel to form hybrid shell-arch structures with curved tied arches. Their sculptural profiles are paired with brightly colored undersides, giving each bridge its own character while maintaining a shared identity across the family.

CIG contributed across the full scope of the project, providing design support, structural and engineering analysis, and extending through manufacturing and installation planning. In addition, CIG supported the fabrication of the thin shell steel plates using shipbuilding manufacturing processes, enabling controlled variation in plate thickness to optimize material use and support the structural performance of the bridges.
