Wind Sculpture (TG) II by Yinka Shonibare stands in front of the Almaty Museum of Arts and was created especially for the museum. The work symbolizes freedom and cultural exchange, combining a light, wind-filled presence with a layered historical narrative.

Shaped like the sail of a ship, the sculpture references the transatlantic slave trade while expressing Shonibare’s idea of “sculpting the wind.” Made of aluminium and finished with patterns inspired by Ankara fabric, it appears fluid and dynamic, shifting in character as viewers move around it and as light changes across its surface. The material choice and textile-inspired patterning echo the intertwined histories and movements of cultures across continents.

CIG provided the project’s technical foundation. Our scope included engineering and structural analysis, as well as the development of the building method to translate the artistic intent into a stable, buildable structure. The sculpture was formed from precision-milled blocks, stacked layer by layer to create the overall geometry. Once assembled, a base surface treatment was applied, including local filler where required, to refine and smooth the surface in preparation for final finishing.

To support logistics and on-site execution, CIG also designed and engineered a dedicated transport frame. This frame ensured safe shipment and was used directly for the sculpture’s vertical installation on site, helping to streamline handling and positioning during installation.

The result is a sculptural landmark that balances visual lightness with technical precision, bringing Shonibare’s vision to life at an architectural scale in the public realm.
