DOT Groningen
Groningen Netherlands
Located in CIG’s home city of Groningen, DOT, formerly known as Infoversum, is a distinctive full-dome theater designed as a space where science, culture, and immersive media come together. Its recognizable exterior combines a white dome with an organically shaped weathering steel structure that wraps around the building.
The outer structure consists of 83 individually shaped Corten steel plates, which were welded together on site to create a continuous shell. Constructed according to the monocoque principle, the steel skin contributes to the structural integrity of the building while creating its characteristic three-dimensional form.
The weathering steel gives DOT an appearance that continues to respond to its surroundings. Depending on the weather and light conditions, the exterior can shift visually from warm orange tones to a much deeper brown, creating a changing contrast with the white dome above.
CIG was responsible for the structural analysis, engineering, material selection, production, pre-assembly, and on-site installation of the complex 3D steel structure. With every plate individually shaped to form the continuous shell, the project brought together CIG’s engineering and fabrication capabilities on a landmark located just minutes from our own facilities in Groningen.
