U.S. Embassy in London

Designed by KieranTimberlake, the U.S. Embassy in London is located in the Nine Elms district on the south bank of the River Thames. CIG contributed to the project through the realization of the cladding for 45 structural columns, developing the architectural column covers into precisely engineered and fabricated components.

Together, the 45 columns comprise approximately 366 linear meters of cladding, with the aluminum skin and supporting construction weighing an estimated 49 tonnes. Each column cover was developed to integrate with the building's primary structure and surrounding architectural elements.

CIG’s scope included pre-design, structural analysis, connection engineering, 3D production modeling, shell plate development, welding calculations, production data, and assembly documentation. A physical mock-up was also produced to establish the required appearance and surface finish before production of the complete series.

For production, CIG procured and processed 8 mm aluminum plate, including cutting and cold forming of the individual skin plates. The column covers were then pre-assembled at our facility, where the panels were welded into sections, exterior welds were ground smooth, and the surfaces were finished and painted before handover.
