Mutrah Fish Market

Designed by Snøhetta, the Mutrah Fish Market in Muscat reinterprets the traditional fish market through a contemporary architectural language rooted in its local context. One of its most distinctive elements is the sweeping canopy, whose flowing form draws inspiration from Arabic calligraphy and creates a recognizable presence along the waterfront.

The roof is composed of angled aluminum fins that filter sunlight and provide shade to the terraces and market spaces below. Their changing orientation creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow throughout the day while giving the canopy its characteristic flowing appearance.

CIG was responsible for the engineering, material supply, production, and pre-assembly of the canopy structure. The project was realized in close collaboration with local partner Steelbuildings LLC, which carried out the on-site assembly and installation of the roof in Oman.
