Noorderpoort College Artwork
Groningen Netherlands
Created for Noorderpoort College in Groningen, this large-scale sculptural artwork is defined by its continuous curved form and perforated aluminum surface. Constructed from curved aluminum plates and ribs wrapped around an aluminum tube framework, the structure combines complex shaping with a lightweight appearance.
The artwork consists of 26 individually formed skin panels divided across three sections. Built from 8 mm aluminum plates and supported by 5 mm aluminum tube profiles, the sculpture features more than 2,100 perforations across its surface. Its pearl-blasted finish creates a soft, diffuse reflection that shifts with changing light conditions.
CIG was responsible for the realization of the artwork, including the creation of the 3D model, detail engineering of the structure, factory assembly drawings, installation planning, work preparation, material procurement, plasma cutting of the panels and “Noorderpoort” lettering, perforation of the skin panels, cutting and bending of tube profiles, production of base plates and connections, 3D forming of the aluminum plates, welding of stiffening strips, pearl blasting, transport, and final installation on site in Groningen.
